Woodlawn Little League was chartered in 1965 and has served the Mount Vernon community for six decades, teaching thousands of young people not only the rules of baseball and softball, but also the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and friendship.
In the winter of 1967, through the generosity of Fort Belvoir, our Board of Directors secured approval to develop the Pole Road fields from an unused parcel of military land. Dedicated parents spent months clearing fields, grading diamonds, erecting fences, and building dugouts and a concession stand—an effort that embodied the commitment and community spirit at the heart of our league.
Following the tragic death of the son of a devoted league family, the fields were officially named John McNaughton Memorial Fields on June 26, 1971. That same year, the Ladies Auxiliary merged into the Woodlawn Little League Association, uniting all league functions under one volunteer-run organization supported by local businesses.
The softball program launched in the 2000s, giving girls in our community the choice to play baseball or softball. Over the decades, our teams have won numerous District 9 championships, two Virginia State championships, a Southern Regional championship, and even appeared in the Juniors World Series in 2006.
In 2015, Fairfax County Park Authority acquired the Pole Road property, renaming it McNaughton Fields Park. The county partnered with our league on a complete renovation of all fields, culminating in the 2024 completion of a new concession stand and restroom facility.
On March 29, 2025, we celebrated our 60th anniversary alongside the grand opening of the new facilities. Over 350 attendees heard from Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay—himself a Woodlawn Little League player in the 1980s—along with Supervisor Dan Storck, State Senator Scott Surovell, and Delegate Paul Krizek. Both the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the Virginia General Assembly passed proclamations recognizing the impact of Woodlawn Little League on our community.
